How we picked
Every headphone here went through our 40-hour test protocol: bench-measured attenuation, logged battery life, and a multi-person comfort panel. We update this list whenever a new flagship changes the ranking.
1. Best overall — Sony WH-1000XM5
The strongest ANC and battery we’ve measured, in a 250g frame. It’s the pair we recommend to most people. Read our full XM5 review.
2. Most comfortable — Bose QuietComfort Ultra
Unmatched all-day fit and the best call quality in the group. See the QC Ultra review for the battery trade-off.

The verdict
For most buyers, start with the Sony XM5. Choose the Bose if comfort outranks raw silence for you.
Frequently asked questions
Do noise-cancelling headphones block all sound?
No. ANC excels at steady low-frequency noise (engines, HVAC) but does little against sudden high-frequency sounds like voices. Expect a big reduction, not silence.
Is more battery always better?
Only up to a point. Anything above ~24 hours covers a week of commutes for most people. Prioritise ANC and comfort over headline battery numbers.
